Stop & Shop, the largest discount retailer in the U.S., is taking steps to make sure its shoppers don’t make life difficult for themselves.
The company is now telling customers to use a separate credit card for shopping and purchases that take place at home, including a $100 gift card and $100 travel gift card.
It’s a change from last year, when Stop & Mart customers had to sign up for an account that required them to use their credit cards at least monthly to make purchases.
Since then, Stop &Mart has offered several other ways for customers to avoid having their identity stolen by using a separate card.
One is to use an identity verification service, such as the one used at Target, Walmart and other major retailers.
Stop & Mart’s new rules also apply to those who purchase items with their own credit cards, including on the same day the merchandise is delivered to their door.
A spokeswoman for Stop & Co. said the new policy will help customers to make better choices and keep their credit scores up to date.
“Customers who shop online using a credit card can’t make purchases at Stop & Shops, but we do ask them to check their card statement to make certain they’ve received the correct card, or the credit card issuer will automatically authorize the purchase,” she said in an email.
This isn’t the first time the company has announced changes to its card policies.
Last year, it began requiring shoppers to verify their identity at least once a month.
The change also affects all customers who use a credit or debit card at the checkout lane, including those who are not yet in the store.
